Harmonizing East-West Art
Western art tends to lean towards objectivity in its formal composition. Sometimes, due to an excessive focus on form, it lacks the expression of emotions, risking turning itself into a mechanical process and art into a printed matter. This is evident in the decline of modern classical and naturalistic styles. On the other hand, Eastern art tends to lean towards subjectivity in its formal composition. Often, because the form is underdeveloped, it fails to express the required emotions, trapping art in the realm of tedious and uninspiring strokes. As a result, art loses its rightful place in society, as seen in contemporary China. In reality, the weaknesses of Western art lie in its strengths, and vice versa for Eastern art. By complementing each other's strengths and weaknesses, the emergence of a new global art is currently underway, dependent on our concerted efforts.
When we consolidate past facts with a historical perspective, it is not difficult to discern the trends in the future of art. The richness and greatness of Egyptian, Greek, Renaissance, and Chinese Tang-Song dynasty arts are attributed to various factors, but the fundamental question lies within art itself — whether it has the potential for richness and greatness. This requires the synthesis of emotions and rationality, a harmonious coexistence that defines great artistic eras.
In contemporary Chinese art, the underdeveloped methods of composition hinder the free expression of emotional aspirations. To revitalize Chinese art, there is a call to integrate the strengths of the West, emphasizing the development of form to harmonize internal emotional needs. This involves importing fundamental Western artistic methods, introducing them with a historical perspective, while simultaneously reevaluating traditional Chinese art to contribute to the world.
